Their work was nominated for the Best Action Design Award in 1991. That was indeed a rather strange year, since four films were nominated instead of the usual five, were nominated. What’s really strange about it was that three of the four films nominated were choreographed by Ching Siu-Tung, the other two being A Chinese Ghost Story II and The Swordsman.

After all, it is a proud Hong Kong tradition for a film to be multi-genre, mixing historical facts, heavy melodrama, broad comedy, and over-the-top action all in one film…This one follows the tradition, although it does to an ever more surreal effect. The film is a police thriller in the tradition of Se7en, a drama, an over-the-top martial arts film, and a meditation on Buddhist philosophy with a bit of comedy thrown in for good measure.
